It would eventually be removed with version 3.0.8 and was not incorporated from here into any variants, even those that used other code improvements from the 3.0 series of releases. As such, it effectively just complicated compiling or altering the game, despite its good intentions. This was really just a preliminary implementation of the idea, and it never really showed its potential as it was just used to duplicate the present C code. Lua scripting, already used in Kamband and ToME, was introduced to Angband in an attempt to make the game easier to modify and promote the easy generation of new variants in the same manner as the edit files had done previously. As such, Globe of Invulnerability was removed as it promoted mages engaging in hand-to-hand combat (albeit massively aided by the spell) rather than magic-based attacks, and replaced with a mage equivalent to the Priest's Glyph of Warding, Run of Protection. Mages in particular had far more range and depth in defensive spells than attacking ones, and the altered spell lists aimed to readjust this so that they could be a distinct non-melee-based choice. The spell list overhaul based on Greg Wooledge's work in GWAngband had similar aims. This is an aim most players agreed on, though these particular changes were not universally welcomed. The JLE patch is one of the biggest changes to happen to the game in Robert's time as maintainer, as it made additions to objects, artifacts and more, and tweaked rarities and abilities to attempt to rebalance the game. These releases contained nothing that wasn't in 3.0.0, they were mostly just to ensure that the game was balanced properly after the info file "patch" by Jonathan Ellis (JLE) and the spell lists from GWAngband were incorporated into the game, and to give a chance for new features such as the use of Lua scripting to be tested across the various platforms Angband caters for. ![]() For completeness, I have listed the release dates of the alpha version below, as they were all ported to the various current platforms, unlike say, 2.8.5's beta version. ![]() Version 3.0.0 was released on 30th May 2002 by Robert Rühlmann, as the culmination of a series of alpha releases (2.9.4 - 2.9.7) that were designed to make sure that such a numerically significant release was as stable and playable as the number suggested.
